1. Police in DC crack down on DC protestors calling for a truce
On Wednesday night, a group of Jewish protestors including members of Jewish Voice for Peace Action (JVPA) and IfNotNow Movement organized a candlelight rally near Capitol Hill to urge Congress to call for a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Demonstrators and police clashed, forcing Democratic leaders to be escorted out of the building.
Eva Borgwardt, IfNotNow’s national spokesperson, said in a statement, “Instead of heeding our call for a ceasefire, police violently attacked nonviolent protesters with pepper spray.”
Leadership from the other groups concurred, with Beth Miller, political director of Jewish Voice for Peace Action, saying in a statement that “hundreds of peaceful anti-war activists came to the DNC to call for an end to bombs and violence in order to save Palestinian and Israeli lives. The police brutally assaulted them.
