1. Blinken visits Israeli, Palestinian leaders

U.S. Secretary Antony Blinken visited Israel after the devastating Hamas attacks on the weekend. He told Benjamin Netanyahu that, “as far as America exists…we will always stand by your sides.”

He warned that civilians should not be hurt in the retaliation against Hamas. “It is so important to avoid harming innocent civilians.”

Blinken and Mahmoud Abdullah also met in Amman, Jordan’s capital. The Palestinian Authority controls a portion of the West Bank, and is a fierce opponent to Hamas which governs the Gaza Strip.

Abbas is now 87 and has been in charge of the Palestinian Authority 18 years. The inability of the Palestinian Authority to hold elections led to an extension of his initial four-year tenure.
