1. Government shutdown continues with no end to sight
The government shuts down at the end the month if Congress does not reach an agreement within 13 days.
On Sunday, the House Republicans introduced a stopgap budget measure that included a cut of nearly 8 percent for most federal agencies as well as tighter border restrictions. The proposal excluded funding for Ukraine as well as disaster relief. The bill is unlikely to pass as several Republicans will vote in agreement with Democrats to oppose it.
2. Dreamers uncertain after federal judge rules DACA unlawful
On Wednesday, a federal judge declared the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals (DACA), immigration program to be illegal.
Judge Andrew Hanen of U.S. District Court for Southern District of Texas decided that the Biden Administration was not allowed to codify DACA into federal regulations, but did not order the repeal of protections against deportation and work permits for more than half a million “Dreamers.”
