<p>As far as natural disasters go, <a rel="noopener noreferrer" href=" target="_blank">volcanic eruptions</a> are one of the most terrifying. Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington in 1980, causing the most recent U.S. major eruption. Fifty-seven <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href=" target="_blank">people were killed</a>, and 47 bridges, 200 houses, 15 miles of railway line, and 185 miles of highway were destroyed, according to the World Atlas. Fortunately, scientists were able to use data about the volcano's seismic activity to predict that an eruption was coming more than a month before the event, and evacuated homes in its danger zone the day before.
