1. C.Q. Brown confirms as the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Charles Q. Brown, the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (the body of senior uniformed military leaders in the United States Department of Defense), was confirmed as such on Wednesday.

Brown will be the chief military advisor to Joe Biden, the president. He is the only Black man in the position of chairman. His confirmation marks the first time that both of the Defense Department’s highest-ranking leaders – the secretary of defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs – are Black.

2. Merrick Garland defends DOJ amid Hunter Biden & Donald Trump probes

Merrick G. Garland, the Attorney General, spoke on behalf of the Justice Department at a House Judiciary Committee Hearing on Wednesday. This hearing was focused on investigations into Hunter Biden as well as the former president Donald Trump. Garland assured Republicans who disapproved that the investigations conducted by his office are independent of partisan politics.
