1. Laphonza a Butler, who replaces Dianne feinstein, makes history

Laphonza Butler will be Congress’s first-ever Black out lesbian senator after California Gov. Gavin Newsom nominated her to fill Dianne Feinstein’s Senate seat, which was left vacant after Dianne’s death.

“I’m honored to accept Gov. @GavinNewsom’s nomination to be U.S. Senator for a state I have made my home and honored by his trust in me to serve the people of California and this great nation,” Butler said in a statement posted on X.

2. Updated breast cancer screening guidelines: what you need to Know

October is Breast Awareness Month. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recently recommended that women begin getting mammograms at 40 years old instead of 50 in order to detect breast cancer.

A new FDA rule will mandate that, starting next year all health care providers must inform women about their breast density on their mammogram reports.
