1. As the war in Israel intensifies, so does the search for House Speaker.
House Republicans are under pressure to quickly decide who will replace Kevin McCarthy due to the sudden escalation in tensions between Hamas, Israel and other parties. Before the House can approve emergency military aid to Israel, a new speaker needs to be appointed. Congress must also pass a new budget by mid-November to avoid a shutdown.
The Louisiana Republican Steve Scalise is expected to take the post after a vote held behind closed doors on Wednesday. His election won’t be official until a majority of members in the full House of Representatives — at least 217 — votes for him.
2. Israeli airstrikes kill more than 1,000 civilians on Gaza
Gaza’s Ministry of Health announced Wednesday that Israel’s airstrikes in retaliation have killed at least 1,100 Palestinians, including 326 children. At least 5,339 people were injured in the blockaded Palestinian territories.
UNRWA, the United Nations’ Palestine Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, said in a statement.
